The City of McCook is warning residents to avoid contact with Kelley Creek after an unintentional wastewater discharge caused by a wastewater line failure. City officials say staff discovered the problem around 2:30 p.m. Thursday when a pipe crossing the creek collapsed after heavy rainfall and increased creek flows caused significant erosion and washout along the stream. The collapse resulted in untreated wastewater entering Kelley Creek. Officials say the duration of the discharge and the total volume released remain unknown.
The City of McCook Wastewater Department is assessing the damage and working to repair the line while monitoring conditions and collecting water samples from the creek. Regulatory agencies have been notified, and the city says it is following required reporting procedures. Until further notice, residents are being advised to avoid wading, swimming, fishing, or allowing pets into Kelley Creek in the affected area.
