OCONTO, Neb. — Fire crews continue to make progress on the Pressey Fire burning near
Oconto in Custer County. The wildfire has burned an estimated 9,141 acres and is 45
percent contained.
Governor Jim Pillen has verbally approved an emergency proclamation in response to the
ongoing wildfire.
One primary residence, multiple outbuildings, and livestock have been confirmed lost. The
Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined the cause to be accidental.
A significant number of local resources are engaged in suppression efforts. Air operations
include two UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters from the Nebraska Army National Guard, which
are conducting water bucket drops in support of ground crews. In addition, a Nebraska
Army and Air National Guard hand crew is assisting with firefighting efforts on the ground.
Officials continue to urge the public to avoid the fire area to ensure the safety of emergency
personnel and to allow crews to operate efficiently.
While donations to support fire crews are appreciated, additional donations are not being
requested at this time.
