September 16 is National Voter Registration Day and Secretary of State Bob Evnen is encouraging Nebraskans to mark the occasion by registering to vote. Nebraskans who are already registered to vote are urged to confirm their registration using Nebraska’s VoterCheck website. As of September 1, Nebraska has 1,257,860 registered voters.
To be an eligible voter in Nebraska, a person:
- Must be a citizen of the United States;
- Must be a resident of Nebraska;
- Must be least 18 years old;
- Cannot have been convicted of a felony, or if convicted, they must have completed their sentence for the felony, including any parole term; and
- Cannot have been officially found to be mentally incompetent.
“Voting is a critical part of our democracy,” said Evnen. “It’s always a good idea to take a few minutes each year to verify your voter registration information so you never miss your opportunity to cast your vote.”
The process is very simple and free of charge. To avoid duplicate registration applications, Nebraskans should start by visiting the VoterCheck website (ne.gov/go/voterview) to confirm their voter registration information. If they are not properly registered to vote or their voter registration is not current, they can complete a voter registration application online (ne.gov/go/NEReg2Vote). Nebraskans can also register to vote by mail, at a state agency (DMV, DHHS, Nebraska Vocational Rehabilitation), via a deputy registrar or via a personal agent.
