A large-scale emergency drill took place Tuesday, August 5, bringing together over 50 participants from multiple local agencies to test and strengthen coordinated emergency response efforts in Red Willow County. The exercise, which began at 4:00 p.m., was led by Community Hospital’s Emergency Management Director, Stacey Aguilar.
The scenario unfolded on West O Street and at the Red Willow County Fairgrounds, simulating a serious accident involving two vans from the Work Ethic Camp and a passenger vehicle. The drill escalated to include a hostage situation involving actor inmates, creating a realistic and high-pressure environment for responders.
Participants in the drill included personnel from the McCook Police Department and McCook Fire & Rescue, Red Willow County Sheriff’s Department and Fairground staff, City of McCook, the McCook Work Ethic Camp, Nebraska State Penitentiary, Community Correctional Center out of Lincoln, Omaha Correctional Center, Nebraska Department of Correctional Services and Reception and Treatment Center, Nebraska Plains Healthcare Coalition, and Community Hospital. Actors played the roles of injured individuals and hostages, adding authenticity to the exercise.
“This drill was a vital opportunity for our community partners to collaborate and practice their response to a complex emergency,” said Aguilar. “The goal is to ensure that in a real crisis, we are ready to act swiftly and effectively to protect lives.”
The event emphasized communication, coordination, and rapid decision-making across agencies. Observers noted the professionalism and dedication of all involved, highlighting the importance of ongoing preparedness training.
Community Hospital and its partners extend their gratitude to all participants and volunteers who made the drill a success.
