
More than 200 of the best area high school students will be on the McCook Community College campus Wednesday competing in the annual Inter-High Day Scholastic competition.
This year students from 12 area schools will be competing for three $500 scholarships overall in addition to the top three students in each of 20 academic areas receiving three free tuition credits for Mid-Plains Community College classes.
Preliminary numbers show 216 area students line up to take tests this year. That’s 43 more students than last year. Competing this year are high school students from: Medicine Valley, Hayes Center, Arapahoe-Holbrook, Dundy County, Paxton, Hitchcock County, McCook, Perkins County, Eustis-Farnam, Maywood, Southwest and Maxwell.
Check-in will be at 8 a.m. the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center, with the first testing session from 8:45 a.m.-10 a.m. and the second session from 10:10 a.m.-11:25 a.m. There are extended sessions from 8:45 a.m.-11:25 a.m. for Business, Criminal Justice and Stem/Engineering.
This year between the academic testing students will have the chance to try out MPCC’s new CDL simulator, to see what it’s like to drive semi-trucks, snowplows, busses and more.
In addition, there are hands-on demonstration at many of the classrooms as well as various activities for students in the gym and special sessions for high school counselors in the VIP conference room in the Events Center.
MPCC staff will be on hand from 9-10:30 a.m. with information on financial aid, early entry/dual credit, career services and four-year partnerships.
