The McCook Community College baseball team split a pair of games with Otero Junior College Sunday at the Jaycees Sports Complex. The Indians lost the first game 7-6 in eight innings and won the second game 9-7.
Otero JC 7, MCC 6 (8 innings) – The Rattlers took a 6-2 lead in the sixth inning only to see the Indians knot the game at 6-6 with four runs in the sixth before Otero scored a run in the extra-frame to clinch the weekend series. The Rattlers won Saturday’s game 8-1.
Trailing 2-0 in the second, MCC got on the board with one-out singles from Chris Bellemare (Grande-Carriere, Quebec) and Parker Kretzel (Thornton, Colo.) and a two-out RBI-single from Julio Seperich (Las Vegas, Nev.).
Down 3-1 in the fifth, Jake Sanford (Dartmouth, Nova Scotia) lined a two-out home run to left field to make it a 3-2 game but Otero responded by putting up three runs in the top of the sixth to lead 6-2.
Jesse Bloom (Centennial, Colo.) started the game for MCC and gave up 10 hits and six runs (four earned) in 5.2 innings of work. He struck out seven Rattlers before giving way to relievers Casey Quagliano (Colby, Kan.) and Tyler Cox (Mississauga, Ontario) who all pitched in the sixth inning. Cox was tagged with the extra-inning loss pitching two innings, allowing one run and one hit while striking out three.
In the sixth inning, singles from Mathew Tremblay (Saint Charles, Quebec) and Bellemare, and an Otero error set the stage for catcher Beau Hawley (Greeley, Colo.) who doubled to make it 4-2. Tanner Zeggil’s (Stagner, Ontario) two-run singled tied the game at 6-6.
Otero put together a two-out rally in the eighth with a pair of walks, a single and an MCC error.
MCC had 10 hits in the game, with two each from Hawley and Bellemare.
MCC 9, Otero JC 7 –The Indians snapped an eight-game losing streak by scoring a pair of runs in the first and third innings and three in the fifth to lead 7-0 but the Rattlers struck for six runs in the sixth and the Indians added a couple runs in the bottom of the inning and held on for the 9-7 win.
Ryan Marstiller (Centennial, Colo.) picked up the win scattering eight hits over 5.1 innings, striking out six and walking one. He was relieved in the sixth by Quagliano and Cox, who picked up the save allowing two hits and a run over the final 1.1 innings.
In the first the Indians loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a hit batter, scored the first run on a sacrifice fly from Mathew Tremblay and the second on two more walks.
In the third MCC got consecutive two-out singles from Michael Sookdeo (Brampton, Ontario), Johnny Giunta (Milton, Ontario) and an RBI-single from Beau Hawley to make it 3-0. An Otero error made it 4-0.
In the fifth the Indians put up three runs, started by one-out doubles by Bellemare and Sookdeo, an RBI single from Zeggil and a two-out single from Jake Reid (Mississauga, Ontario) to give the Indians a 7-0 lead.
The Rattlers battled back with four straight one-out singles in the top of the sixth inning and a pair of doubles to make it 7-5 and added a two-out single to close to 7-6. In the bottom of the frame, the Indians added a pair of runs on a walk, two Otero errors, and a fielder’s choice.
The Indians had nine hits in the game with two each from Reid and Sookdeo (who also drove in two). Bellemare and Sookdeo had the only extra-base hits, both doubles.
With the Sunday split MCC is 9-17 on the season. The Indians will host Western Nebraska Tuesday at 2 p.m. and Garden City Wednesday at 3 p.m. and continue the homestand this weekend against Trinidad State. A single nine-inning game is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. and a pair of seven-innings games are set to start Sunday at 1 p.m.
